Glenhuntly Club 90th Birthday Celebration Function – Friday 9th December

What a fantastic event this was !!

More than 250 Hunters (past and present) and supporters celebrated 90 great years at St Kilda Town Hall last Friday night.

Guests enjoyed a great night of fun with fellow team members, shared memories with old club friends and heard inspiring words from Olympic silver medallist Brenda Carr (about pursuing your dreams!), and 2012 London hopeful Sean Wroe and club premiership captain Will Little.

President Max Binnington spoke passionately about the ‘Hunters Way’ of helping each other and thanked the clubs unsung heroes (our enduring partners at home that have supported so many of us in pursuit of our athletic dreams).

A thoughtful tribute to Maxine Corcoran was delivered and the rich history of the club and the exciting future were on display with a presentation to the successful 2011 women’s winter premiership teams, followed by a Hunters’ DVD highlights package and a birthday cake cut complete with a rousing 250 voice strong rendition of happy birthday.

In his telegram message, club patron Ron Clarke said that joining the club was one of the best decisions of his life. Hopefully that sentiment was shared by many on the night and will be shared by many more in years to come.

Thanks to all who helped make the night such a success, including sponsors, helpers, organising committee, club committee and those who came along to be part of a great historical event.

Happy Birthday Hunters!

Shane Fairlie – Organising Committee Convenor

Hunters from across Australia (and from Thailand) gathered at St.. Kilda Town Hall last Friday night to celebrate our 90th Anniversary. It was done in fine style thanks to the great efforts of the Organising Committee, Chaired by Shane Fairlie, who have spent many hours pulling things together and were at the venue long before the rest of us to ensure we all had a great night. Well done all. Belinda Dennett and Grant Smethurst did a great job of getting the crowd to stop talking when they needed their attention on the formalities but left plenty of opportunity for a catch up with so many old friends from the past. And it was great to see a wonderful mix of old and new Hunters.

For those of you who couldn’t make it I suggest you start planning now for 2021. It will rock Melbourne. It also leaves our athletes ten years to make The Hunters All Time Team, so go to it.

Finally a thanks to all those who assisted behind the scenes with advice, contacts, memorabilia and especially to Natalie for holding back on the birth of the baby allowing Shane to enjoy the success of the evening.

Go Hunters

Max Binnington – President

  1. I am pleased to hear it was a great night. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this time but will mark 2021 in my diary for sure. I sure Mum would have been proud to see so many gather to celebrate too.
