The A. E. Beames Contest for the A. A. Theobald Shield 66th Staging of the men’s event (1947 – 2012)
and the 14th staging of the Women’s Shield.
This year’s staging of the event was held on the Uni-loop tan track on the banks of the Torrens River Adelaide on Sunday morning August 25th.
For the first time in 12 years, our men’s teams won in Adelaide; 16pts to 20 pts. (1,2,5,8 to 3,4,6,7) This gives us our 50th success over Western Districts ,who have 16 successes. The first staging of the event was in 1947 when WD were narrowly successful 17 to 19.
We have won 21 of the stagings in Adelaide, mostly in the 1960s to 1980s., while Western Districts have won 3 in Victoria (all in Ballarat).
The women’s contest was begun in 1999 so this was the 14th staging. We have won all stagings in Victoria, and this is our second success in Adelaide.
Veteran Lesley Grimes has been in 3 winning teams 1999, 2005, and 2012.; finishing second on each occasion.
The highlight of the event was the wins by our two juniors (Ben Kelly and Niccola Anthony); Ben for the second time. It is great to have their support and it is hoped that this might encourage more of them to participate to keep this long-time event going.
Another highlight was the effort of two veterans in making their team. Len and Lesley become the two oldest runners to make a winning team. And how can we overlook the effort of TV, 56 years after first running this event, (1956) finishing in a dead heat with Peter Buller. ( Peter’s ample chest? just holding him in contention).
Club secretary and Winter Captain, Chris Winter, did well for second but was no match for a determined Ben. Leo and Frankie were our other team members. Leo had run in the Australian Cross Country the day before (as had Ben, Chris, and Niccola) while Frankie thought she would give the field a running start by beginning late after a frantic run to the start line after sleeping in. Her run was impressive.
Mention should also be made of Kev Esmore, Tony Doran, and Peter Buller, who have done so much over the past decade to ensure this event remains alive. They have been regular travellers and made great friends with WD athletes and families, which has helped to prolong the staging of this race.
It was also good to see junior Sascha Bondarenko-Edwards parents, Russell and Angie, also compete and finish the course.
Most members enjoyed the hospitality of our WD friends at a dinner in the city on the Saturday evening; there was good camaraderie between the clubs. It was good to see Toby Rayner attend this function after the Australian title run (18th) but he had an early flight due to work commitments Sunday.
Well done to Gaet Aiello and the WD members for organizing a great event and to the wives and friends who organized a great morning tea for us all.
One other thing that was great to see were some of the old timers who came out to watch the event. Murray Edwards (WD) and Neville Scott (WD and GHY) were there to see this year’s event, along with others. Murray in particular was first WD to finish for five years at a time when TV and Tony Cook were prominent in the 1950s and 1960s.
