In what was an outstanding effort from our master’s (40+) women, they finished the Shield final runners up to Box Hill. This was our first serious attempt at fielding a 40+ women’s team and all are to be congratulated on their efforts in what was hot/humid and generally unpleasant competing conditions.

It was really great to see the efforts and comaraderie of all team members as they fought the conditions to secure this terrific effort.

It was a real all round team performance as we contested every event. Enthusiasm was a hallmark of this group.

Sandra Howarth was magnificent with two first placings (Hammer and Shot) and Heather Carr put everything into her 200m to secure fastest time. Heather backed up for 3rd in the 3km walk.

Heaps of credit must go to the women who contested the distance events in such trying conditions; Kellie Macknamara (3rd in 800m) and Michelle Ciavarella (3000m and 800m), Bridget Wetherall (3000m), Lyn Bullock (800m), Heather Carr (3000m Walk) and Gwen Steed (30000m Walk) fought the elements and never conceded.

Team Captain Vicki Charles contested four events (300m Hurdles, Hammer, Shot, and 200m) to lead the team strongly.

Kellie Macknamara and Marlene Gourlay tried events they had never done before. (High Jump and Triple Jump) to gain us valuable points. It says a lot about team spirit.

Our relay team of Kellie Macknamara, Marlene Gourlay, Michelle Ciavarella, and Lyn Bullock ended a very long day with a top effort second placing in the 4*400m.

Of course, a number of others competed at times during the season and were all helpful in getting us to the finals. Julie Nield in her debut year hurt an Achilles and could not compete, Lesley Taeuber had a crook knew, Kara Gilbert was on iron woman Triathlon ,and Kim Nanscawen was a late starter to the season. Thank you all for your involvement

Can we go one better next year?

Let us give it a real go; recruit and cover all events.
