Club Helpers who have supported the Club at Shield this year.

If your name (or someone from your family) is NOT on the list, then you are still to take your turn as a Club helper.

If you have assisted but your name does not appear please make sure you let Max Binnington know tomorrow.

We need more parents assisting rather than have athletes and Team Managers and Club officials who already give a great deal of their time to ensure we do not lose Team points due to a lack of Club Helpers. You do not need to be a qualified or experienced official to undertake these roles. The Athletics Victoria officials will ensure you know what to do.

Please let Max know tomorrow that you will help for an hour or so.

Andrew Ross: Masters Men Report – Tan Relays XCR’14

Masters 50+ Presentation – Hunter Winners of XCR’14

Coming into the Tan Relays, the final event of XCR’14, the season was already promising to be the Glenhuntly Masters most successful one in a long time. With flying machine Craig Semple and evergreen Chris Wardlaw having already won the individual 40-44 and 60+ titles respectively, it was up to the 50+ team to hold on to its 5 point lead on the ladder to win the title. Normally the gun 40+ runners Craig Semple and Peter Macknamara are enlisted to the Div 1 and 2 Open teams, but with both teams out of contention, it was decided to enter a 40+ Dream Team to try to win the event. The pair were ably supported by the returning Simon Lindsay, a former Hunter who has come back to do some short racing after running marathons for the past few years. I did mention to Simon that it is possible to mix up distances and just compete in everything!

Chris Murphy (left) & Chris Wardlaw (right) in Tan 2014 action

When TV and I were tossing around the Dream Team option, I suggested (perhaps unfairly) that Simon would have to run close to 13:00 minutes flat for us to win the event. In the end, he ran an excellent 13:07 following Peter Mack’s 12:36, then it was up to Craig Semple to chase down the  tearaway leaders Waverley. As it turned out, Craig completed the fastest Hunter split of the day, a brilliant 11:42, but unfortunately couldn’t completely close the gap, coming in 4 seconds behind Waverley, in second place. Sadly, my prophecy about Simon needing to run 13:00 minutes was pretty close to the mark, but kudos to all three boys who gave it their very best, and won a Silver Medal! The second 40+ team of Ian Henderson (15:40), John Evans (15:47) and Attila Tokai (15:12) finished in a commendable 7th place.

Andrew Ross (left) & Attila Tokai (right) in Tan 2014 action

The 50+ team only needed to finish 4th or better, to win the overall title. With Vic Masters stacking their Div 5 team, we knew we were a chance to win our third relay gold medal of the season. Paul Strangio led us out as usual with a super-consistent 13:34, but unfortunately Box Hill had a 12:28 so we were a bit behind. Andrew Ross ran a PB of 13:36 to get the lead back by the end of leg 2, then it was up to the promoted Roland Soderstrom to hold on. After being passed by Box Hill’s 3rd runner, Roland camped behind him until very near the end, when he took him by surprise and came home for the Gold Medal! Roland ran an excellent 14:20 under a lot of pressure.

Michael Ryan (left) & Len Johnson (right) in Tan 2014 action

Well done boys, and also to the second 50+ team of Mick Ryan (14:49), Victor Cook (14:39) and Dennis Gellert (16:00) who came in 7th. Congratulations also to the 11 other Masters who competed in Open divisions, including filling Div 6 and Div 7.

And finally, a special congratulations to Craig Semple, who received the Hunter Masters Winter Champion award at the Winter Presentation Night.

Round 3 Shield 13/14

Women

The athletic gods must like what we’re doing, after a week of rain we were blessed with yet another beautiful day for interclub at Knox. And the girls certainly didn’t disappoint in round 3.  With 20 girls competing we had another comfortable win, hopefully we can maintain this excellent attendance throughout all 12 rounds and remain undefeated come finals. Once again we had two relay teams competing, both running impressive 4x100ms to place 2nd and 4th, whilst getting in some baton changing practice for State Relays.

Emily made waves in the sprints running the fastest times for the club over both the 100m and 400m, with 13.23 and 59.69 respectively and in the 100m hurdles. In the 100m there was barely anything in it with Sherena running 13.30 and Amber 13.45; the 4x100m relay team is looking very promising for this weekend. Despite AV running behind yet again and knowing there was a fierce headwind to contend with on the home straight, 7 girls waited patiently to run the 400m.  Estelle, Kirrily and Danielle all ran close times to one another and Laura blitzed her heat despite being talked into running at the last minute.

In the distance events Chynea secured the win in the 3000m steeple and felt every step of the extra kilometre she had to run since joining the open ranks. Despite running a huge personal best in the 5000m only two nights prior Stacey took out the 1500m, only her second attempt at the distance, in a new PB of 4.57.3. Anna was 2nd, also under the 5 minute barrier and Kaitlyn and Laura both ran solid 9 second improvements on their round 1 times. Simone breezed through the walk a full minute faster than last time, in 10.25.7, but wasn’t fast enough to lap yours truly due to a new PB by close to 2 minutes being set.

It was a very successful day for us in the field yet again. Chynea jumped the furthest in the long jump and highest in the pole vault; Molly easily won the high jump and Birgitta both the javelin and discus. It was great to see Noni Thompson return this week and compete in the discus as well.

As of round 3 we now have a 40+ age group for the women.  Although only two were present this week, Vicki and Helen, they did extremely well. If there were medals involved their necks would be weighted down. Competing in three events each Helen won the 100m, was 2nd in discus and won the 1500m, taking a huge 10 seconds off her previous best to run 5.25.4. Vicki was 3rd in the 100m and 1st in both the javelin and discus. It was an impressive start to the season for the age group.

We have 7 relay teams entered at the State Relay Champs this Saturday at Lakeside Stadium. Our teams look extremely strong and hopefully we get some great results.  Good luck to all the girls competing and feel free to come down from midday to cheer the teams on. Congratulations everyone on a job well done last Saturday and for those not doing relays we’ll see you at Knox once again for round 4 on November 30th.

Men

While the weather was warm on Saturday at Knox the cool headwind on the front straight proved somewhat troublesome for our sprinters. Led by Aidan Debernardi (11.19) and Sean Farnan (11.59) in the 100m they struggled against the unfortunate conditions and still managed to finish the day with some quite respectable times. These conditions, however, did not seem to perturb the middle distance athletes who powered through their heats dominating the 1500m racing field. Rhydian Cowley found himself in what seems to be a regular position leading not only the walk by nearly two minutes, but the 1500m as well, proving once again walkers can be runners at heart.

The 4x100m A team showed excellent form leading into the State Championships consolidating victory by over two seconds, despite some rusty change-overs. Meanwhile in the field Beau Lang and Patrick Beraun were caught flexing some muscle in the throws, Lang looking particularly impressive with a 49.75m throw in the Javelin coming a very near second for the day. We must commend Beau Lang, Justin Cohen, and Stefan Voorham for their impressive point scoring efforts across so many events.

Round 2 Shield 13/14

ROUND TWO OPEN WOMEN’S REPORT, FRANKSTON  by Cass Higham

So it looks like there’s something in the water at Glenhuntly; how else do we explain coming 1st and 2nd in both open men and women this week? Congratulations to you all! We had another fantastic turnout at Frankston, 26 this week; two relay teams on the track again, placing 1stand 4th this time, and two new athletes, Susan Hesselink and Danielle Trowell competing for their first time. Susan ran a terrific 3000m, easily breaking her goal of 12 minutes, while Danielle had great runs in the 200m, 800m and the relay.

It was excellent to see Birgitta and Katja making their debut in the hammer throw. Joining Juliet and Chynea the girls placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. The four proved to be a winning formula again in the triple jump, where Birgitta won with a jump of 11.41m. Molly took out the high jump and Katja trumped the shot put with a new PB just shy of 11m.

On the track Amelia made the record books again. Running a PB of close to 30 seconds she blitzed the women, and a good portion of the men, to finish the 3km in 10.03.5 – placing her 13th on the all-time list of Glenhuntly women and in great form leading up to the 5000m Vic Champs. After months of sprint work Kirrily ran an amazing 800m, taking seconds off her previous best she was the first Hunter home in 2.21.8. The women secured 1st through 8th positions in the 3km and 2nd to 9th in the 800m, along with Simone’s win in the 3000m walk we look to have cemented ourselves as a force to be reckoned with both on the track and in the field.

With the help of new and returning athletes this year the first 8 of our 200m runners all finished under 30 seconds despite a strong headwind. This is an incredible feat when you consider last year we seldom had 8 girls compete in the event in a round and few of them would have run so fast. At Frankston Ash lead the way in 26.09 with Amber and Emily close behind.

With the exception of the walk and hurdles we had two full teams in every single event and for this reason we had a dominating win by both teams over our rivals. It is a real achievement that should make you all proud; teams do not get to the top on one person’s points alone and you all contributed towards this win. Congratulations girls and see you all at Knox.

Round 1 Shield 13/14

Round One Report: Open Women

Despite a last minute venue change we had a fantastic turnout at Knox last Saturday with 25 women competing. We were happy to welcome new athletes Vicky Charles, Kaitlyn Papworth, Estelle Lopes and cross country runner Stacey Bulger who competed in her first track race at interclub.
After last year’s slow start it was a welcome change to have so many girls present and eager to compete in events. And it was a great sign for the season ahead that we were able to fill not one but two relay teams, placing 2nd and 4th in the 4x100m. The relays are great for building team spirit, practice for the upcoming state relays champs next month and of course for earning big points, so it’s always worth it if we have the numbers.
In the field Sophie and Birgitta both threw personal bests, 40.86 and 40.25 respectively, to take the top points in the javelin. Then Birgitta, along with sister Katja, repeated the feat by taking the top spots in discus.
Of the 25 women at Knox, 12 of them competed in 1500m. Amelia ran her own race, securing a 6 second PB and national qualifier of 4.39.84. Stacey proved she wasn’t just good on the hills running a speedy 5.03.9 in her first ever 1500m, and we were very happy to welcome back both Kellie and Muriel to the track. There was definitely strength in numbers as we dominated the leader board here and then again in the 5000m.
It was great to see our sprinters challenge themselves and their rivals, with Amber running the second fastest time for the day in 12.73 and Sherena extremely close behind in 12.82 in the 100m and Estelle running the fastest time for the hunter women in the 400m in 62.89.
Our amazing captain Anna Ross led the way competing in 8 events for the day and it was great to see many girls following her example; Laura certainly didn’t regret her efforts in the 5km despite the heat and wind and Chynea, who is a very welcome addition to open from the junior ranks, earned great points in the sprint hurdles and in the field.
It was a brilliant day at the track and I hope you all enjoyed being a part of it. Everyone’s hard work and energy paid off as we topped the ladder, unfortunately our second team just missed out to Knox, finishing in 4th position. There were lots of PBs despite tough conditions; hopefully this is the start of a great season for all. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Frankston Athletics track on November 2nd where we can have our first go at this seasons’ finals program. Happy training until then.

Junior Men’s Report

It was terrific to see so many Junior Hunters keen to start the Shield season last Saturday at Knox. The team spirit was already evident with some athletes trying new events and others volunteering to make up a relay team to help get our team points off to a good start. On top of this, there were plenty of quality performances.

In addition to the Hunters on the track at Knox, I received reports from the APS championships indicating that many of our Junior Hunters performed exceptionally well.

Given the quality start to the season, it looks like we’re going to have a great season of PBs and, hopefully, we will get a few of our teams through to Shield Final.

If you have any mates who haven’t registered yet please encourage them to do so ASAP.

Shield is a team competition. Your team is your age group. You can earn points for your team by having a go at as many events as you can. It doesn’t matter how fast you run or how far or high you jump or throw. Some athletes enjoy having a go at a range of events as it gives them an opportunity to hang out with their mates and have fun!

Relays earn extra points so it would be terrific if you could try to form a team with your age group each week.

I look forward to seeing you all for Round 2 of the Shield Competition at Frankston on November 2.

Go Hunters!!

Open Women

Congratulations to our Open Women’s Shield Final team, what a result!!  This is a great record for Glenhuntly women especially since the last time the women’s team won was 53 years ago.

The team spirit was high on Saturday at Lakeside Stadium with the Open Women’s outstanding efforts producing PB or SB!

First up was the 100m with Emily McLean (13.25) and Sherena Mulgrave (13.51) getting 6th and 8th place.  3000m steeplechase was next with Cassie Higham (12.31) getting 3rd place – What a great result despite being stuck in traffic and doing no warm-up.  400m got some great results with Emily McLean (61.36) and Kirrilly Burnett (61.69) coming 4th and 5th respectively with Anna Neumaier (62.54) and Anna Ross (64.24) not far behind coming 9th and 11th.  The 1500m started at the hottest time of day but the girls still ran fantasticly well with Sarah Lund (4:38) coming 1st and a SB and Amelia Aslanides (4.45) coming 3rd with a PB of 5 seconds, Anna Neumaier (4.50) and Anna Ross (4.54) coming 5th and 7th.  4x100m relay with Sherena Mulgrave, Enily McLean, Juliet Austin and Birgitta Nemaric coming in 3rd and just beating Box Hill.  The 100m hurdles with one of our best newcomer Birgitta Nemaric (16.24) coming in 2nd with Emily McLean (18.20) not far behind coming 4th.  The 2000m walk Simone McInnes (10.57) came 2nd despite getting two warnings and Cassie Higham (14.36) PB by almost 2 minutes.

Next onto the field events came the long jump with Birgitta Nemaric (5.36) coming 3rd and Molly Grau (4.36) not far behind.  Pole Vault Molly Grau (2.45) and Juliet Austin (2.00) came 3rd and 4th respectively.  Javelin with another newcomer Sophie Lichoudaris (37.62) and coming 1st and not far behind was Birgitta Nemaric (37.42) coming 2nd.  Last and not least was the discus with the Nemaric sisters competing – Birgitta Nemaric (41.78) and coming 1st and Katja Nemaric (31.65) coming 5th.

These are such great results and this is a testament that we have all worked so hard together and as a team.  Thank-you to all the girls that stayed behind to wait for the presentation, it was such a long day for all of you.

A special thank you to all the Open Women who competed throughout the season to help the team make Finals. Thank you also to all the coaches and all your hard training.

Well done – you are all super stars and this is now on the record books!
Anna Ross, Helen Rainey, Josie O’Sullivan

Open Men

The final event for Shield season 2012/13 came to Albert Park in very hot and tiring conditions for all athletes, managers and officials.  Despite spending 10 hours at the track everyone was able to get the best out of themselves.  The Men’s Open team was striving for back to back premierships.  While this was not to be, a finishing place of 3rd was still respectable.  It showed once again why the Glenhuntly Men’s team has the depth and determination to keep backing up year after year with outstanding results.  These were some of the highlights from the day:

  • -Aidan Debernardi and Dylan Calleja breaking the sub 11 mark with 10.84 and 10.99
respectively.  They both came 1st and 2nd in the whole final.
  • -In the 400m Braydn Tatham ran a 50.29.
  • -The 1500m saw Rhydian Cowley run an outstanding 3.56.0.
  • -The 4 x 100m relay saw an outstanding run from our whole team (Leigh Pheelan, Braydn
Tatham, Aidan Debernardi and Dylan Calleja), resulting in 1st.
  • -The 110m hurdles saw Kulan Ranasinghe do 17.28.
  • -The walk saw Rhydian Cowley dominate as per usual with 7.49.2.
  • -The 3K steeple had Peter Macknamara run 10.13.5.
  • -The long jump saw Aidan Debernardi jump 6.32m into a headwind.
  • -The pole vault saw Beau Lang jump 3.50m which is a PB.  The javelin also saw him throw
    46.71m.
  • -The discus saw Patrick Beraun throw 36.12m.

These are the highlights from the day, and there were many other good performances on the day and most importantly throughout the season.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from the team for their time and effort in helping the Open Men’s team to another Shield Final and another podium finish.  This includes all athletes, managers and captains, without this team effort the results would not be as good as they have been this year and in recent years too.

I would like to finally wish everyone with upcoming meets and championships the best of  luck. I hope this year’s third place finish will motivate the team to get back the premiership next season and make it three premierships from five seasons!

Andrew Weerasekera

Women Under 18

A huge ! thank you to our seven U/18 girls who braved the heat & swirly winds to run in the Shield Final at Albert Park last Saturday.
What awesome sportsmanship shown by these girls. First was Eva Zeleznikow who on her own, was rounding up the 2,000m walk & field events, Discus, Long Jump, & Javelin. Next was the 100m sprints, with Izzy Flook, Countenay Wood, Ashleigh Chapple & Eliza Tatham, all with strong finishes,  running   top 3. With no time for a drink or a break, Ashleigh had the task with her team mates Maddison Holmstrom and Georgina Ryan  in taking on the 1500m. All achieving  outstanding performances. There wasn’t much break for Maddison, who then teamed up with Izzy, Courtenay & Eliza to run the 400m, with Pb’s for both Courtenay & Eliza. Congratulations to all girls not only for a wonderfull day but also for an outstanding season. You should all be very happpy and proud of your efforts. A big thank you also to the younger girls who helped out by running above their age in the relay events throughout the shield meets. It has been a pleasure being your team manager this year. I hope to see you all again next summer for the 2013 / 2014 season.

Donna Brammer

Men Under 16

Congratulations to our Under 16 Men’s Shield Final team of Daniel Hamilton, Chris Hibbert, Edwin Kwek, Andrew McGrath, Declan Murphy, William Ockenden, Haftu Strintzos, James Taylor, Samuel Toll and Sebastian Zammit.

The team spirit was palpable on Saturday at Lakeside Stadium with the Under 16’s outstanding efforts producing PB after PB. Of the 21 individual entries, 16 were PBs!

Will got the boys off to a great start on the track with his terrific performance in the 2000 steeple (7.46.8). The next few track events saw a clean sweep of PBs by Chris (12.34.7) and Daniel (12.36.1) in the 2000 walk and Andrew (11.93), Edwin (12.70), Declan (13.07) and Sebastian (13.32) in the 100m. The boys fired up again for the 1500m with great runs by Samuel (4.24.7-PB), Haftu (4.32.9-PB), Chris (4.33.3) and Declan (4.33.4-PB). The last track event of the day saw some powerful 400m runs by Andrew (54.14), James (55.70), Daniel 57.47-PB) and Declan (57.81-PB).

PBs also abounded on the Field with Sebastian (34.51) and Chris throwing PBs in the javelin (19.82) and Sebastian (38.64) and Daniel (22.93) in the discus. The boys also performed well in the long jump with Edwin leaping to an equal PB (5.10) and Daniel jumping 4.53.

The multitude of events covered by the boys is testament to their Hunter spirit and their willingness to ‘take one for the team’. This was evident not just on Saturday at Shield Final but throughout the season where the boys worked hard to ensure we had all events covered and that we continued to accumulate points each week to clearly qualify us for the Finals.

A special thank you to all the boys who competed throughout the season to help the team make Finals but who were unable to participate due to injuries or other commitments. Thank you also to all the parents and coaches who supported the boys in their endeavours.

Well done Under 16 Junior Men – you are super stars!

It has been a pleasure being your Team Manager.

Round 12 AV Shield: Casey Fields

The last round of the summer season was held at Casey Fields and the strong performances on display mean the Glenhuntly men are in a perfect position to take on the Shield Final in two weeks time.

Dylan Calleja and Braydn Tatham were the outstanding athletes in the 200m, both winning their respective heats (23.59 and 23.68). There were not many participants in the 800m with Beau Lang picking up the best time (2:10.7) from the Glenhuntly men followed closely by Antonio Russo (2:11.5).

Chris Winter was usual suspect in the 5km run, posting a solid time of 16:01.5 but special mention must go to points-machine Justin Cohen for hitting the track with 21:02.4 It was also Justin Cohen who was our only competitor in the 400m hurdles, posting a time of 71.5 and picking up some vital points in the process

It was not our strongest showing in the 4x400m relay, falling behind Knox’s division one and two teams. Hopefully we will have full numbers come the Shield Final!

Tim Rosen smashed out a great Triple Jump, hitting 12.55m followed by Beau Lang with 11.91m.  Justin Cohen reached a PB in the shot put as he threw 6.86m and reached an equal PB height in the High Jump, getting over the bar at 1.45m. Beau Lang was our best thrower in the shot put at 8.05m.· Team Captain Will Little was the only competitor in the Hammer on the day, throwing 17.60m.

So rest up Hunters and start preparing yourselves for the Shield Final on Saturday 16th February, where we are looking to make it three titles in four years! Go Hunters!
